12/31/2023 0 Comments Grateful dead membersThe place had good vibes and they (and everyone else) seemed to really enjoy themselves there. This is a wonderful show not so much for being one of the best recordings extant from that year, but mainly for how well the band worked the acoustics of the venue and the overall intimacy of the Carousel Ballroom (FW). The 1970 shows, as is so often said about Dead shows in general, were ones you had to be there to fully appreciate. Unlike a lot of places that were used for live concerts, the Carousel was actually built (in the swing era) for sound. While memories of this and the half dozen other 1970 evenings I spent with the Dead are fading fast, by the mid-70s I was certain that the summer Filllmore West shows were among my favorites attended in that year or any other. PSSS: if you want to rate my review feel free to use the Forum to vent your hate, opinion, and rants.I won't read em anyway. The IA recommends users of Windows XP view this web-page with RealPlayer. Here's one way to stream/dowload this show: Windows Media Player has a 10 band EQ and SRS WOW effects that enhance the sound. I recommend using your EQ during playback of most of the shows on the IA, this one included. California had the best schools in the country in 1970.now they have the worst.ah, progress. If you weren't alive in 1970 you can't imagine it. I highly recommend adding this show to your 1970 GRATEFUL DEAD collection. Here they are, the scariest band in 1970. Performing before the hometown crowd the DEAD kick it in gear and prove they have what it takes to rule the underground. ![]() Pigpen gets his digs in on Man's World, the band boogie-jams the hell out of Good Lovin', and is that Pig hootin' away at the beginning of Cosmic Charlie?Ĭheck out what apparently is an upgrade from Bear - this thing just sparkles and is a real treasure to add to the archive (Cumberland is still cut think these guys were still losing money for Warner Brothers in 1970. The descending drop from Main Ten to a very, *very* early (and, if I may say, tepid) Sugar Magnolia has the crowd in delights. Politics halfway through, it being post-Kent State and all the band is ready to meet the challenge for wherever her trip was taking her (and the rest of us, she refusing to stay in her own movie and all).this is a magnificent creation, peaking, rising, so rhythm-textured and fine, the Dead matured from the rough, ragged experiments of the previous year and seeing how the movement has aged like wine. The Other One suite is absolutely unreal. The acoustic stuff is as lovely as ever, Marmaduke and Nelson chiming in, but hang on to your seats, boys and girls, for that white-smoldering-hot Cumberland - the cut that threatens to derail this masterpiece I think is one of those we can all agree needs some miracle patching. The only addition was 2 seconds of silence prior to the start of disc 3. The breaks between each CD were breaks that were already present on the DAT. ![]() The only editing was to remove approximately 4 minutes and 22 seconds of repeated material on the DAT during the banter between Top of the World and Cosmic Charlie.
